FOR Garry McKenzie joining a gym wasn't something he ever thought he would have the confidence to do.

The Laverton resident who suffers from acute anxiety disorder for many years felt isolated and on some days felt too dejected to even get off the couch.

Now coming out the other end of this mental illness Garry wants to use his experiences to help others who may be depressed, disadvantaged or suffering from a mental illness.

Your Best Body Challenge is the brainchild of Garry and with help from his friend and body builder Mike Holton they want to inspire others to take up the challenge.

The challenge, which has been designed as a competition, is targeting the isolated, disadvantaged and overweight people over 40 to get off the couch, get out of the house, exercise and meet new people.

Garry said this competition is not like a Biggest Loser competition – contestants will not be asked to send embarrassing photographs of themselves in their underwear.

“We don't want to embarrass people – this competition has a life focus. We won't kick you out if you don't lose enough weight,” he said.

“The ultimate goal is to lose weight and create a new lifestyle in the process.”

Garry wants to empower people to take control of their lives and start living more socially and healthily particularly those who suffer from a mental illness or a socially and economically disadvantaged.

“As a community we should take ownership of our community and try and help people,” he said.

Entering the competition is free; anybody can join with weekly prizes up for grabs.

Garry, who has a background in social work, is encouraging residents from all walks of life to get involved.

Christmas Reflection on Australia's Abandoned Animals!

Two happy pups were found running in a busy intersection after Christmas in 2009. The pups were not micro chipped, nor did they have any identification tags on them. It was fortunate they were found by UPS owners who are devoted animal lovers and housed them until they were returned to their owners.

UPS has since endeavoured to educate others on responsible pet ownership. We are nearing Christmas when many families, partners and friends buy animals for gifts. However this is the time that many animal shelters are overcome with unwanted animals and shelters are faced with dilemmas of turning them away due high intake or putting them down.

Be sure that if you know someone who is interested in becoming a pet owner of any animal, that they are ready to take on the responsibilities required. Animals maybe given as a gift, but the joy comes with a life long relationship of companionship with your pet! Most importantly, this is the time to take a look at all the animals that have already been neglected and have been living in animals shelters. The Lost Dogs Home and the Cat Protection Society, to name a couple have many animals that are just waiting to be taken into a caring and loving home!

If you have any compassion in your heart, you will spare some gold coins and purchase some tinned cat & dog food or blankets and deliver them yourself to any animal shelter before Christmas this year! Together, we can a difference in these animals lives...

Team UPS  have been unstoppable this year, winning or placing in everthing they have entered.
And we wernt let down over the weekend with natural "superfreak" Aaron Curtis not only winning bodybuildings INBA Victorian state title on saturday but backing it up by winning ANBs Victorian state title on sunday....
An amazing achievement and we are very proud of Aaron.

Aaron now goes on to represent Victoria at the national competitions for the respective federations.
Its game on from here and no holding back and we're confident of Aarons abilty.
