Cherry Ripe Crumble Bar - By Elissa Jewell

Cherry Ripe Crumble Bar- By Elissa Jewell

This bar would be suitable for anyone who's undertaking high intensity or long-duration exercise and needs a hit of energy either prior to, or after their session. It's relatively low in fat and carbs but contains a substantial amount of tart cherry juice - packed full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that has been proven to reduce post-exercise muscle soreness in studies with long distance runners (http://www.jissn.com/content/7/1/17). In addition to the cherry juice, you've also got the anti-oxidants from the apples and cocoa, quick-digesting whey protein for muscle retention and recovery and sugars from the fruit and oats to halt catabolism. It would also do well as a breakfast bar if you're on the run!

Unlike most packaged recovery/protein or energy bars, it's completely devoid of additives, chemicals, sugar and sugar alcohols and other manufactured substances and is actually soft, fluffy and dare I say.... pleasurable to eat.

Ingredients:

2 green apples, diced and cooked (leave the skin on for added phytochemicals and nutrients)
90mls of tart cherry juice concentrate (found in the fridge at any good health food store)
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
1.5 scoops of UPS whey protein in Belgian Chocolate (nutrient content provided is using UPS Slim)
1/2 cup of rolled oats, cooked in water and left to cool
1 whole egg
1/2 tablespoon of coconut butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
1 tablespoon each of crumbled walnuts, raw oats and almonds.

 Method:

Cook the oats and apples first and leave them to cool. Once cool, mix together 60mls of the cherry juice, the cocoa, coconut butter, cooked oats, whey protein, egg and baking powder until well combined. Pour into a lined baking dish, preferably rectangular or square in shape.

Process the cooked apples and the other 30ml of cherry juice together until it forms a thick sauce. Pour the sauce over the top of the chocolate and cherry mixture and then top with the walnuts, raw oats and almonds.

Bake in a moderately hot oven (180 degrees C) for about 20 minutes. Cut into 4 squares before serving.

Choc-Berrylicious Brulee- By Elissa Jewell

A simple to make, basic recipe that provides plenty of slow-digesting proteins and unsaturated, healthy fats for anyone looking to lose body fat or whom requires added casein prior to bedtime in order to retain muscle mass and halt catabolism overnight. You can change the type of UPS product to suit your needs - for example, Slim can be exchanged with the WPI or bulking protein depending on your goals and calorie needs.

Ingredients:

1.5 scoops of UPS Slim in Berrylicious
1 scoop of UPS Slim in Belgian Chocolate
3 tablespoons (60g) of low-fat cottage cheese
1 whole egg

Cinnamon

Method:

Simply place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and combine until smooth.
Pour the mixture into two ramekins and bake in a medium oven (about 160 degrees) for 10 minutes.

Ultimate Tri-Carn - Fat Metaboliser

L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell. Ultimate Tri-Carn utilises three differing types of L-Carnatine to further enhance absorption and uptake.

Frequently asked questions:

Customer: I have used L-Carnitine products before and hated the taste. Is this the same?

UPS: Ultimate Performance Supplements utilizes three different types of L-Carnitine to further enhance absorption and uptake. Further more, we use pharmaceutical grade L-Carnitine conforming to United States Pharmacopia standards, providing you the highest quality on the market. UPS is above the rest, formulating the best tasting L-Carnitin. Tri-Carn comes is two great flavours, Lemon/Lime and Wildberry.

Customer: How does Tri-Carn work? And when do I use it?

UPS: An adequate supply of l-carnitne is necessary for the maintenance of good health. L-Carnitine transports fatty acids through the body and is metabolised. It aids the release of stored body fat, into the blood stream and is utilised as energy. During exercise, the body will burn fat at a rate of 75-80% of maximum exertion, thus less glycogen from carbohydrates is burned. L-Carnitine allows the body to burn more fat, save more glycogen and ultimately boost stamina and endurance. By providing more fat to the muscles, carnitne makes asseccessible an otherwise unavailable energy source. We suggest a serve prior to exercise is most beneficial.

Depression & Exercise - Facts and Tips

Everyone feels sad from time to time, but depression is characterised by prolonged feelings of sadness, dejection and hopelessness. Depression is a complicated illness, which can involve a number of contributing factors such as genes, environment, lifestyle, brain activity, psychology and personality.

On average, depressed people only exercise about half as much as people who aren’t depressed. This lack of cardiovascular fitness puts a depressed person at an increased risk of heart attack. It also seems that depression and exercise influence each other – a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of depression and depression increases the likelihood of a sedentary lifestyle

Regular exercise can be an effective way to treat some forms of depression. Physical activity causes brain pleasure centres to be stimulated and leads to feelings of wellbeing. Exercise can also be an effective treatment for anxiety. Some research studies indicate that regular exercise may be as effective as other treatments like medication to relieve milder depression. Generally, exercise has a place in treatment as part of a comprehensive approach to the illness.

 Other therapeutic benefits of exercise

Apart from changes in brain activity, there are other factors that may help explain the benefits of exercise:

  • The person experiences a boost to their self-esteem because they take an active role in their own recovery.
  • Some forms of exercise, such as team sports, are also social events.
  • Physical activity burns up stress chemicals, like adrenaline, which promotes a more relaxed state of mind.
  • An enjoyable bout of exercise may be distracting enough to break the vicious cycle of pessimistic thinking.

Physical benefits
The physical benefits of regular exercise include:
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Reduced risk of premature death
  • Reduced cholesterol level
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Maintenance of healthy weight
  • Improved muscle tone.
Getting started

Feeling tired and being less motivated in general are two very common symptoms of
depression. This means that exercise is often the last thing that people feel like doing
when they are experiencing depression. Therefore, it can be useful to use some of the
strategies below to help with motivation to gradually become more active:

Make a plan

* Start slowly and build up gradually. For example, if you have not been exercising
at all, start with a 10-15 minute walk each morning, and gradually increase this
to 30 minutes per day.
* Set short-term realistic goals for exercising each week (e.g. 3 x 20 minute walks
per week). Plan to exercise at specific times of the day that fit in with your
lifestyle and write your plan down.
* A range of health professionals can assist with increasing activity

Keep motivated

* Keep an activity diary each day.
* A pedometer can be helpful in keeping track of your activity levels.
* Get other people involved ask a friend, partner or relative to join you.
(Although it is common to not feel like socialising when experiencing depression,
it can be helpful to include others in exercise, to gain support and help with
motivation).
* Write down the specific benefits that you would like to gain from exercise, and
refer back to these to help with motivation (e.g. reduce stress, improve mood,
get in shape, and improve sleep).
* Write down the situations that you would expect to make it more difficult to
exercise, and a plan to address these (e.g. if it rains, go for a walk in a shopping
centre; if feeling tired, go for a 10 min walk)

Keep it up

* You don’t have to join a gym – try a variety of different types of activities to find
those that you enjoy (e.g. swimming, walking the dog, jogging whilst listening to
music, riding a bike, gardening, bushwalking, yoga, weight-lifting).
* Give yourself a break – if you don’t stick to your exercise plan, simply start again
from where you left off.
* Remember that it can take time for the benefits of exercise to occur.
(Most exercise studies showing a significant reduction in depression have examined
exercise programs of at least 8 weeks).

Seeking medical advice:

If you are new to exercise, are pregnant, a smoker, are overweight, have heart disease or major health problems,  see your doctor for medical advice before commencing vigorous exercise.

Inspiration, anyone?- By UPS sponsored athlete & P.T, Penny Lomas

Before (May 2010) After (August 2011)

Personal trainer- Penny Lomas

Testimonial by Tim

5 months ago I was using a safety pin to hold up the zip on my jeans because they were too small. I couldn’t run and my stamina was at an all time low. In the past 5 months I have lost 20kg. This isn’t always something to be proud of as you should never really let yourself get to the point that you have excess weight of that amount. However, my pride has come in the fact that fitness and exercise isn’t something that has ever come naturally to me.  I was never athletic in school and I couldn’t focus on going to the gym for longer than a month. I am proud that I have actually changed my life, and changed it while I am young – starting as I mean to go on.

I have tried joining a gym in the past, but with my busy timetable it was hard to get into and keep exercise within my day-to-day life.
My reasons are many, and the most evident being for my health and future. I had family members worried for my health due to my weight and I too was worried. Diabetes and joint problems have both been common in my family history and being overweight doesn’t help either. I also moved to Melbourne, Australia from London to change my life and do things I wouldn’t do back home. I have little distractions and excuses here, and when I started working in a gym I had the perfect opportunity. It was at the gym that I met the Personal Trainer, Penny Lomas. Her energy and passion instantly caught me and from there we started my journey.

I wasn’t a typical student, I didn’t just live of copious amounts of toast and pasta, however I still wasn’t eating as well as I could. And this is the big change that has happened for me over the past few months, Penny has educated me on what to eat and the reasons why. I now understand why certain foods are in moderation and being aware of what is healthy for your body. I have friends who treat food as the enemy, however I have learnt that food is my friend and I shouldn’t have a negative relationship with it.

Firstly, Penny and I worked to bring in consistency with my eating habits and training. I started eating regularly and clean so that my body and energy was feeding from natural sources so that my energy was consistent and not just a high. It was this initial stage that I realized how important food is, and how much it does affect your body. I could really feel the difference with having natural foods, and a large proportion of those being raw. Another new introduction to my diet was protein shakes. Penny introduced me to UPS Ultimate Slim protein, which aided me in my training and dieting routine, thus not being a meal replacement, however introduced as a snack. For me my protein would always be part of my morning routine, as it was an easy way to keep myself going while I was busy at work.

The big difference that I have noticed in my mindset is that I am now educated and I can now hold myself responsible for my own actions as I not only right from wrong, but also the reasons why. I know that if I have a break or I loose faith in myself that I don’t have to start again nor have I failed. I just pick myself up and kick myself back into place. Education is key. People question why obesity is such a problem within modern day culture, and I really believe that education is key to understanding changes in lifestyle and to move forward. Penny has helped me move forward and has really pulled me up out of the rut I was in.

With this new start, the future is mine for the taking. I know that when I move back to London, training will be part of my day-to-day life. I am now lucky enough to be at a point where I can set new challenges for my fitness rather than to loose those excess kg’s! I still have a little more to go, however I know how to go about it and to have faith in what I can do. I am going back to the UK winter, so I have a little longer to get the beach body for the summer and maybe start training for a half marathon… watch this space!
