Personal trainer- Penny Lomas
Testimonial by Tim
5 months ago I was using a safety pin to hold up the zip on my jeans because they were too small. I couldn’t run and my stamina was at an all time low. In the past 5 months I have lost 20kg. This isn’t always something to be proud of as you should never really let yourself get to the point that you have excess weight of that amount. However, my pride has come in the fact that fitness and exercise isn’t something that has ever come naturally to me. I was never athletic in school and I couldn’t focus on going to the gym for longer than a month. I am proud that I have actually changed my life, and changed it while I am young – starting as I mean to go on.
I have tried joining a gym in the past, but with my busy timetable it was hard to get into and keep exercise within my day-to-day life.
My reasons are many, and the most evident being for my health and future. I had family members worried for my health due to my weight and I too was worried. Diabetes and joint problems have both been common in my family history and being overweight doesn’t help either. I also moved to Melbourne, Australia from London to change my life and do things I wouldn’t do back home. I have little distractions and excuses here, and when I started working in a gym I had the perfect opportunity. It was at the gym that I met the Personal Trainer, Penny Lomas. Her energy and passion instantly caught me and from there we started my journey.
I wasn’t a typical student, I didn’t just live of copious amounts of toast and pasta, however I still wasn’t eating as well as I could. And this is the big change that has happened for me over the past few months, Penny has educated me on what to eat and the reasons why. I now understand why certain foods are in moderation and being aware of what is healthy for your body. I have friends who treat food as the enemy, however I have learnt that food is my friend and I shouldn’t have a negative relationship with it.
Firstly, Penny and I worked to bring in consistency with my eating habits and training. I started eating regularly and clean so that my body and energy was feeding from natural sources so that my energy was consistent and not just a high. It was this initial stage that I realized how important food is, and how much it does affect your body. I could really feel the difference with having natural foods, and a large proportion of those being raw. Another new introduction to my diet was protein shakes. Penny introduced me to UPS Ultimate Slim protein, which aided me in my training and dieting routine, thus not being a meal replacement, however introduced as a snack. For me my protein would always be part of my morning routine, as it was an easy way to keep myself going while I was busy at work.
The big difference that I have noticed in my mindset is that I am now educated and I can now hold myself responsible for my own actions as I not only right from wrong, but also the reasons why. I know that if I have a break or I loose faith in myself that I don’t have to start again nor have I failed. I just pick myself up and kick myself back into place. Education is key. People question why obesity is such a problem within modern day culture, and I really believe that education is key to understanding changes in lifestyle and to move forward. Penny has helped me move forward and has really pulled me up out of the rut I was in.
With this new start, the future is mine for the taking. I know that when I move back to London, training will be part of my day-to-day life. I am now lucky enough to be at a point where I can set new challenges for my fitness rather than to loose those excess kg’s! I still have a little more to go, however I know how to go about it and to have faith in what I can do. I am going back to the UK winter, so I have a little longer to get the beach body for the summer and maybe start training for a half marathon… watch this space!
